«ASSESSMENT OF EXISTING STRUCTURES»
Abstract:
Due to the social and economic need of utilizing existing structures, damage assessment and safety evaluation of existing structures are of major concern. Moreover half of the budget spent for construction activities is related to retrofit of structures and infrastructure. The assessment framework, the reliability based methodologies and criteria are presented in this lecture. They include general risk acceptance criteria, reliability updating based on new information, safety verification and cost optimal selection of safety measures. Special emphasis is paid to recent developments within the Eurocodes and the fib (fédération internationale du béton) and to case studies dealing with buildings, bridges and tunnels.
