George K. Varelidis received an undergraduate degree in architecture and engineering (1991) from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), followed by a doctorate at the same university.  His thesis was entitled “Proposed Framework for the Rehabilitation of Residential Areas in the Urban and Suburban Field of Athens: Social, Institutional, Operational and Urban Planning Aspects” (1999).  He is fluent in French and English. 

He has been a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering University of West Attica since 2018; Head of the Department of Civil Engineering (2018 to the present), Associate Dean of School of Engineering (2019 to the present), Director of Urban Planning and Architectural Design Department of Civil Engineering (2018 to the present), Director of the Postgraduate Programme (MSc) “Policies and Applied Methods for the Protection of the Environment”, Department of Civil Engineering (2018 to the present), Director of the Postgraduate Programme (MSc) “Architectural and Structural Rehabilitation of Historic Buildings and Complexes”, Department of Civil Engineering (2017 to the present), Member of the Research Committee of the University (UNIWA), Member of the Special 7-Member Council of the Special Account for Research Grants (ELKE) and a State Licensed Researcher of the higher level (C level), categories 2 (Urban Applications) and 27 (Environmental Applications). He is also founder (2007) and academic head of the “Urban Observatory of Industrial Districts in Attica”

As a PhD candidate and holder of an IKY scholarship, he had taught and supervised thesis at NTUA (1992-1999 in the Departments of Agricultural Topography, Engineering and Architecture-Engineering in 1999-2000). After receiving his doctorate, he taught the course “Sociology of Urban Space” to architects and engineers at NTUA. He proposed and supervised more than 320 students’ theses, more than 60 master theses, 27 of which were undertaken with specific research purposes, in the context of agreements between the Urban Observatory and municipalities, prefectures and other organizations. He is an Academic Advisor (2010 to the present), and since 1993 has been a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) Examining Committee that grants licenses to architects and engineers to practice their profession. 

His research interests, scientific publications and other writings extend over the fields of urban development and planning (including reconstructions of city districts with emphasis on the institutional and business context of their development, networks of public spaces, illegal construction, construction control and the management of lands around cities, the institutional framework for regulating urban space, the co-existence of incompatible land uses, etc.), the fields of Land Use or Regional Development (EU programmes “CULT RURAL”, “PICT”, and the local Habitat Agenda etc.) and those of architecture (protection and documentation of traditional settlements and historic sites, historic buildings, monuments and facilities, the symbolism and interpretation of post-functionalism etc.) 

He has certificates in Class III public studies in category 27 (environmental studies) and in category 2 (studies for urban development and street plans). His professional experience has been continuous (1991 to the present) and includes indicatively: 

  • Urban development and physical planning  studies, such as the inclusion of regions of second-class housing  on the GPS (e.g. Lakka and Mavro Lithari, Anavyssos),  demarcation of ZOE and GPS in the Municipality of Phyli, urban planning studies and implementations (e.g. Mesongi , Corfu), developmental studies on the local and regional scale (e.g. programmes for Attica), networks of public spaces (e.g. planning for the historic park of the Evelpidon Military Academy),  programmes for sustainable development , the local Habitat Agenda, proposals for private urban development, etc. 
  • Architectural studies (buildings and facilities for new uses, studies for tourist accommodations,  restorations, changes of use) under the programmes “LEADER I“, “LEADER II’, “Preservation of Cultural Heritage” and “Agricultural Development – Reorganisation of the Countryside 2000-2006”. He has also drawn up a number of architectural designs for residences and special buildings (offices, catering, restaurant, theatre and the Cultural Centre in Alexandrini, a preliminary study for the Prefectural Centre of Laconia, Centre of Greek Culture on Ikaria etc. 
  • Studies of Environmental Consequences and Preliminary Environmental  Assessment for many uses, projects and activities. 

He has evaluated as an expert of General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (G.S.R.I.) applications for projects of the “Cooperative Innovation Formations” Action (2020). He evaluated proposals (2005-2007) for the ARCHIMEDES ii program (Special Management Service EPEAEK) and represented the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) on the Committee for Urban Planning and Architectural Control (EPAE) at the Directorate of Town Planning in the western region 2004-2010. He is likewise a TCG arbitrator (2009-present) and expert (1996-present).  As a regular member of the Permanent TCG (TEE) Committee on Urban Development and Town Planning Issues (2003-2009), he was engaged in matters related to codifying the urban planning legislation, urban development specifications, the legal and technical processing and proposals for bills and basic institutional texts for the decade 2000-2010.
