Assistant Professor

Dr Konstantinos Skalomenos is Assistant Professor of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of West Attica, Greece. He also serves as Assistant Professor of Structural and Materials Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy of the UK. He is a graduate of University of Patras, Greece, where he received his Diploma in Civil Engineering (2007), MSc in Earthquake-Resistant Design of Structures (2009) and PhD in Seismic Behaviour and Design of Composite Steel-Concrete Structures (2014). He has served as international research fellow (2015-2017) in the Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University, Japan, under a prestigious scholarship awarded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He also won a Research Assistant Professor position (2017-2019) in Kyoto University for the Theme III (2017-2031) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Resilience Project of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).

Dr Skalomenos publication record includes 40 peer-reviewed journal papers, more than 85 conference and workshop papers, many reports and book chapters related to the seismic behaviour of innovative steel and composite building structures, and earthquake-resilient design and retrofit of critical infrastructure using high-performance materials and advanced technologies. His team’s work has won the SDEE Ahmet Çakmak 2021 and the IStructE MCRG 2022 Best Paper Awards. As a recognition to his achievement in the field of earthquake engineering, he has been nominated for the 2023 Smeaton Medal in the UK. His research portfolio includes 25 funded research projects (in 11 as the PI and lead) with nearly 1-million-pound funding. He is the leader of Structures theme group in National Buried Infrastructure Facility (NBIF) at University of Birmingham and works closely with industry (e.g., Nippon Steel, Takenaka Corporation, AtkinsRéalis, WSP Global Inc., Ajax TOCCO International Ltd., Archipetrol S.A., Archirodon Construction (Overseas) Co. Ltd). His team’s work has been patented by industrial partners and research institutions in Japan and China.

Dr Skalomenos has organized four international workshops in the field of disaster prevention engineering for young structural engineers and researchers, publishing 3 workshop proceedings. Currently, he serves as collaborating teaching staff member at the Hellenic Open University in the thematic areas of “Earthquake Engineering and Seismic Resistant Structures” and “Engineering Project Management”, and as a member of the IStructE international technical committee “Seismic and Dynamic Events Panel”. He has practical experience as Construction Quality/Supervisor Structural Engineer in the Construction and Real Estate Company of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, Greece, and as Structural Engineer employed by the University of Patras for the seismic assessment and retrofit of public old RC administration buildings in Greece.
